Looking Beneath the Labels: Hyperactivity, Reactivity, and Aggression
We use these labels easily. But when you look closely at the research, you start to see how much sits beneath them — and how often the variables we overlook may be the most informative. Expanding our lens beyond the observable behavior itself can change how we interpret a case and how we decide to intervene.
This month, we’re examining two studies from the same research group exploring factors associated with hyperactivity, reactivity, and aggression. The most interesting findings don’t just point to dog characteristics—they highlight the role of guardian factors in ways that raise important questions about what might be driving behavior in the first place. Together, these papers challenge us to think more carefully about how we assess and approach these cases.
